Matthew Wiens MD

Dr. Matthew Wiens is an epidemiologist and post-doctoral fellow from the Center for International Child Health at the BC Children’s Hospital and the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) and a Visiting Researcher at the Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Mbarara, Uganda. Matthew has been conducting research examining the epidemiology of pediatric post-discharge mortality in Uganda since 2009. This research has focused primary around the development of prediction models to identify children at high risk of mortality following discharge and on the development of interventions to improve post-discharge outcomes among these children. Most recently, Matthew’s work has focused on a large validation study and initial transition to scale work of a “Smart Discharge” program, focused on improving down-referrals among children at high risk of post-discharge mortality (step-wedged interventional cohort study of 8000 children). This work has been funded by the Thrasher Research Fund, the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and Grand Challenges Canada. With over 40 peer reviewed publications, Matthew’s research has been recognized internationally. Matthew currently lives in Mbarara, Uganda.
