Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been the top cop of the Sheriff’s office of Arizona’s Maricopa County for almost 18 years. Following his service in the US Army and 5 years as a police officer in Washington DC and Las Vegas, Sheriff Arpaio became a federal narcotics agent and built a reputation for fighting crime and drug trafficking around the world. He infiltrated drug organizations from Turkey to the Middle East to Mexico, Central, and South America to cities around the U.S. His reputation as a tough lawman, along with his expertise and many successes, led him to top management positions with the US Drug Enforcement Administration, retiring as head of Arizona’s DEA office in 1992.
