According the the Center for Disease Control, approximately one if four adults 55 years of age or older are faced with some type of mental health issues. The most common conditions include anxiety, severe cognitive impairment, and mood disorders (such as depression or bipolar disorder)
Many of today's older adults grew up at a time when not only was there a stigma associated with mental health problems but also they were not as well understood as they are today. Mental illness is underdiagnosed in older patients for many reasons, some of which are the attitudes associated with ageism.
