Originally coined by John Welwood, spiritual bypass is a defense mechanism addicts may use to avoid their feelings by engaging in spiritual practice. People who experience spiritual bypass find that no matter how much they immerse themselves in yoga, philosophy, religion, etc. they still feel unfulfilled, sad and/or angry.
