Leading a nonpartisan council of elders in 2007, Professor Ephram Isaac demonstrated tangible results that broke a political deadlock in Ethiopia that condemned 35 opposition members to life in prison for alleged attempts to overthrow the government. A negotiated deal was accepted by both sides: clemency in exchange for an admission of guilt and a promise to respect the rule of law. In 1998-2000, he led an Ethio-Eritrean peace delegation to Ethiopia and Eritrea during the tragic war between the two countries, and helped to negotiate an end to the war.
