For more than a decade our tax laws have been temporary. Two years ago, with no agreement on a long term fix, many tax laws were expiring. Income tax rates would rise; estate taxes would have more bite; and many other tax provisions would end. At the very end of 2010, a lame duck Congress extended most of the tax provisions for two more years through 2012. In theory, this was enough time for the politicians to give us a permanent solution. Now the time is up. The political climate in Washington is even more contentious. Presidential as well as congressional elections are up for grabs. Congress
