Today more than any other time in recent history, grandparents contribute to the quality of their grandchildren’s lives. Many say they are the safety net for American families. AARP’s 2011 study found grandparents are providing a great deal of direct care for their grandchildren; 11% of grandparents have a grandchild living with them (19 % among African-American grandparents,) and nearly half of them (47%) also have the grandchild's parent living with them.
