It has been widely observed that many patients with dementia have a noticeable worsening of symptoms later in the day. These changes may be seen as increased confusion, sleeplessness, agitation, fearfulness, and paranoid thinking. This has been called “sundowning” or “sundowner’s syndrome.” Dr. Brinkman discusses some of the factors that lead that lead to this pattern and factors to consider in managing the challenges that arise.
