After age 65, the fatality rate for drivers begins to climb very significantly. In the 75 to 84-year-old range, it becomes approximately equal to that of teenage drivers. For individuals 85 and older, the fatality rate skyrockets. With the elderly representing a growing segment of the population of the USA, issues of driving safety are becoming more prominent. Balancing independence with safety of driver and others on the road, clinicians and family members have difficult decisions to make.
