Trauma describes a wide range of experiences that include single occurrences as well as on-going incidents. Some examples are: traffic accidents, the sudden death of a loved one, all forms of abuse, natural disasters, medical disasters and war. The effects of trauma vary. Most psychologists believe that you can survive trauma and alleviate the symptoms. They do not, however, believe that people can truly heal from trauma, thrive and even experience what is now called posttraumatic growth.
