Author Donna Minkowitz broke the Brandon Teena news story for the Village Voice, which helped inspire the film Boys Don't Cry. Recently Minkowitz revisited that experience for the Voice in a new essay "How I Broke, and Botched, the Brandon Teena Story." We'll discuss her experiences reporting on the story then and now, as well as her memoir Growing Up Golem: How I Survived My Mother, Brooklyn, and Some Really Bad Dates, which goes into many of the personal aspects of her life which influenced the perspective shift.
