Nearly 70 percent of the fresh produce sold in the U.S. contains residues of potentially harmful chemical pesticides, according to the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) 2020 Dirty Dozen™. EWG’s newly released consumer guide outlines the produce items with the most amount of pesticide residue, as well as a list of the fruits and vegetables with the least amount. Thomas Galligan, Ph.D.

While earning his B.S. in dairy science at Virginia Tech, Thomas developed an interest in understanding the connections among human activities, ecosystem health and public health. This led him to earn his Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from the Medical University of South Carolina, where he studied the effects of environmental contaminants on alligators and bottlenose dolphins. Thomas returned to Virginia Tech for a postdoctoral position, during which he investigated links between ecosystem degradation and reproductive health in the hellbender salamander, in addition to teaching undergraduate physiology.
