In this episode of Planet Classroom, we hear from leading dancers at the Martha Graham Dance Company as well as the Company's Artistic Director Janet Eilber. All talk about their experiences performing the iconic ballet Appalachian Spring and how they have adapted and innovated through the Covid 19 pandemic.

Janet Eilber

Janet Eilber has been the Center’s artistic director since 2005. Her direction has focused on creating new forms of audience access to the Graham masterworks. These initiatives include designing contextual programming, educational and community partnerships, use of new media, commissions and creative events such as the Lamentation Variations and Prelude and Revolt. She has also remixed Graham choreography and created new staging in the Graham style for theater/dance productions of The Bacchae and Prometheus Bound. Lloyd Knight

Lloyd Knight, was born in England and reared in Miami, has a BFA from the New World School of the Arts under Artistic Director Daniel Lewis. Mr. Knight joined the Martha Graham Dance Company in 2005 and has been a Principal since 2014. He has had ballets choreographed on him by Nacho Duato twice, Andonis Foniadakis, Larry Keigwin, Doug Varone, Lar Lubovitch, Kyle Abraham, Liz Gerring, Michelle Dorrance, Anne Bogart, Pontus Linberg, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Pam Tanowitz and Mats Ek. Dance Magazine named Mr. Knight as one of the "Top 25 Dancers to Watch" in 2010. He partnered with New York City Ballet Principal Wendy Whelan in Ms. Graham's "Moon Duet" and with American Ballet Theatre's Principal

Jacob Larsen

Originally from Northern California, Jacob joined The Martha Graham Dance Company in 2016 and performs featured roles in the classics Diversion of Angels, Secular Games and Appalachian Spring as well as in Woodland by Pontus Lidberg. Mr. Larsen received his BFA from Marymount Manhattan College performing works by Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Aszure Barton among others. He has worked collaboratively with Sidra Bell Dance New York, and while at Springboard Danse Montreal 2015, performed works by Alexander Ekman and Banning Boulding of New Dialect. Anne Souder

Anne Sounder joined Martha Graham Dance Company in 2015 and performs Martha Graham’s own roles in Dark Meadow Suite, Chronicle, Ekstasis, and Deep Song as well as featured roles in Herodiade and Secular Games to name a few. She has also been featured in works commissioned for the company by Marie Chouinard, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Maxine Doyle, and Bobbi Jene Smith. Ms. Souder began her training in Maryville, Tennessee, and earned her degree in the Ailey/Fordham BFA program, graduating with a double major in Dance and Theology.
