We frequently—and strongly—suggest that families discuss what they can afford when it comes to college. But talking money can be challenging. We have advice to make “the talk” a bit easier. Athletic recruitment has many moving parts, and it’s often the parents who are charged with keeping track of everything. We’ll share suggestions for ways parents can help their recruited athletes. Finally, we will address the most common myths we hear regarding the University of California schools.

Becky Leichtling found her passion for college admissions early on. As an undergraduate at Carleton College, she was a tour guide and senior intern, and becoming an alumni interviewer after graduation. Her admissions career continued at Tufts University, where she was responsible for the recruitment, applications, and enrollment of students from the Southwest, Midwest, and northern New England. She also helped develop the prospective student experience by coordinating tour guide and student outreach programs, and managing accepted student open houses. Tara Piantanida-Kelly comes to College Coach with more than 20 years of experience working in college financial aid offices. She worked her way up from an entrylevel financial aid counselor position before accepting her first director of financial aid position at Menlo College. From there, she launched a successful financial aid consulting business, Financial Aid Solutions. From 1995 until 2005, Tara consulted at more than 20 colleges and universities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Jay Bonham has worked in education his whole career. He began his tenure in college admissions at his alma mater, Hamilton College. While at Hamilton, he was responsible for the recruitment, selection and enrollment of all undergraduate students from the New England area along with students from Maryland, Washington DC and Virginia. Besides his recruitment responsibilities, he was also the athletic liaison and managed the schools transfer admission program. He held similar admission responsibilities at Kenyon College.
