Travis began his playing career at Moon Valley High School in Phoenix. He then received a scholarship to Northern Arizona University where he started for four seasons, playing in 43 games, setting numerous school records including career passing yards (11,400) and career touchdowns (86). He was inducted into the NAU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.
