The US Senate Special Committee on Aging recently held hearings on elder abuse. One 90-year old man testified that his step-son withheld food and medicine from him and his wife and so terrorized them that they were virtually prisoners in their own home. Shockingly, the man testifying was well known actor Mickey Rooney, and experts estimate that 2.1 million older Americans are victims of abuse and neglect every year--the majority of them mentally impaired and unable to speak up for themselves.
