In the mid-1930s, a group of people gathered repeatedly to find that by supporting each other in adhering to a common set of values and principles, they could survive addiction only with complete abstinence. AA was the first successful effort in human history in arresting addiction. We find that a balance is necessary between principles of addiction recovery (e.g. complete abstinence), with supporting growth and the ability of each person to meet one’s own needs, yet empowered within a community of caring and respect.
