Mental illness’ has been embedded in our culture since the beginning of time. Some religions believed that mental disorders were caused by one of the gods, others believed that disturbances were caused by problems in the relationship between the individual and God or that abnormal behavior represented the wrath and punishment from God. The punishment was seen as a withdrawal of God's protection and the abandonment of the individual to evil forces, and the mentally ill considered incapable of deserving humane treatment and protection.
