The Declaration of Independence says that we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all persons are created equal and are endowed with certain inalienable rights, including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Our rights may be inalienable, but we can still lose them. If you kill someone, you lose your liberty and maybe your life. If your pursuit of happiness includes molesting a child, you lose that right. But not only do we lose our rights, we throw them away.
