4/28/11 Program dedicated to his memory Dr. Daniel Brookoff, co-founder of the Methodist Comprehensive Pain Clinic in Memphis, TN scheduled guest host for April 7, died April 13th. He served thousands of patients desperate for pain relief. The show interviewed lobbyists and wireless representatives, who all denied there was a problem. Kalnitsky was compelled to learn more. He began researching the world news regarding cell phones and discovered that information abroad included studies conducted by prominent scientists, who reached very different conclusions than what is being reported in the U.S. Kalnitsky got very concerned, especially about the danger to children, misinformation about hands-free kits, and a lack of independent and unbiased reporting on cell phone issues. Libby Matthews
Libby Matthews married with two daughters, Laura 17, and Anna 14. Since 2009 Libby’s been advocating for her daughter Laura and other individuals diagnosed with a tick-borne illness. When Laura was six years old three ticks bit her while playing in her Birmingham back yard. Despite the absence of a rash, Laura developed numerous symptoms over the next ten years. She was mis-diagnosed many times. When 15 Laura and her mom noticed that she was losing her ability to grasp a pencil, hold a door open, or pull down a paper towel. She also experienced episodes of “blanking out,” without losing consciousness. After taking Laura to a neurologist who diagnosed epilepsy, Libby knew all the symptoms were somehow connected. It was then Libby sought medical attention for Laura out of state. Many tests confirmed the diagnosis of tick-borne infections and the explanation for her symptoms. Jack Miles, retired Olympian gymnast was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1993. In ‘55 he was named to the Pan-American Olympic Team and in ‘56 to the U. S. Olympic squad. He was an integral part of Florida State University’s competitive team that won five NCAA and AAU championships in the 1950’s. He was an All-American and a member of the first Florida College or University sports team to win a National Team title. Jack invented and performed the “whippet” on the flying rings. He founded the Florida Gymnastics Association. He coached Ron Galimore, the first African-American to make the USA Olympic Gymnastics team. He acted as a stunt man, a stand double for Frank Sinatra, Tony Randall, Jaime Farr, Andy Williams, and William Shatner. He had small parts in Gentle Ben. Her job is to acquire donated laptops, and repair, if necessary, or update them so that the college graduate students in Kenya have a tool for completing their work and education. In Kenya, students are not allowed entry into colleges or universities until they have completed a computer course. The cost of this course, per student, is approximately $620. So for the students at Mercy Home, a computer lab is the only chance of getting into higher education, unless they have a sponsor. Mercy Home’s broader plan is to teach the computer course to other local students who live close, therefore generating some revenue by charging them a reasonable fee. She spent over two decades working with children of all ages and their families. After the death of her husband she earned her Master of Science in Counseling from University of South Alabama. She was a therapist at the Meadows, focusing on sexual addiction and personality disorders. When Patrick Carnes left the Meadows to start his own treatment center for sexual addiction (Gentle Path at Pine Grove) she joined him, earned her Licensed Professional Counselor status, and became a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist. Deborah spent two years at Pine Grove treating patients who were professionals struggling with personality disorders and addictions. The last four years she has worked with sex addicts and their family members, at first as a therapist and then as the clinical director of Gentle Path. Today Deborah divides her time between Alabama, Mississippi and Texas providing individual and group counseling with family members of all ages and facilitates intensive workshops dealing with sex addiction and co-sex addiction. A tick bit Liz Schmitz in her Atlanta yard in 1991. She contracted Lyme disease. Despite no travel history to the northeast, five labs confirmed her diagnosis. Two other tests found Borrelia Burgdorferi DNA. She co-founded and is president of the Georgia Lyme Disease Association. Liz works with medical providers, scientists, politicians, and public health officials. She seeks funding for research in the Southeast. Liz has hosted presentations to communities, medical groups, school students, and scout groups. The Georgia Lyme Disease Association provides patient support and educational/preventative information to create awareness of tick-borne illnesses in the South. GALDA volunteers have submitted proclamations to the governor and hosted Lyme and Tick-borne Disease Awareness Programs at the Georgia State Capitol during Lyme Disease Awareness Month for two consecutive years. Dr. Melanie Barton
Dr. Melanie Barton has been a holistic psychotherapist since 1985. She has a Master's degree in Social Work and a Doctorate in Pastoral Counseling. Dr. Barton is a licensed as an independent social worker, and is a member of the National Association of Social Workers. She is an ordained Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister. She teaches meditation and visualization. She is an advocate for people lost in the maze of the social services system and a mentor to people in recovery.
Dr. Barton specializes as a consultant to churches in transition and conflict. She has published poetry, a magazine article “Who gets the Church when Couples Divorce”, on-line articles about eating disorders, closing a therapy practice abruptly due to a medical crisis, and her life story. In 2008 she was named social worker of the year in Huntsville, Alabama. Dr. Barton's technique for healing is to focus on six key areas of life: spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, social, and financial. Her specialty is connecting people to mentor one another to shorten healing time.
