James P. Cooney III
Selected as one of the “Best Lawyers in America” since 2000 in civil & criminal litigation, celebrated litigator, James P. Cooney III, practices with the law firm of Womble Carlyle. Charlotte, North Carolina. Jim is a recipient of numerous awards in his home state and just recently received the No Carolina Bar Association’s Wade Smith Professionalism Award for Criminal Defense. He is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and a Permanent Member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. Following his graduation from Duke University, summa cum laude, and the University of Virginia School Of Law, he clerked for the Hon. John D. Butzner, Jr., 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals prior to going into private practice. Jim is a past-President of the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, is a member of the Advisory Commission on the Rules of Civil Procedure for the North Carolina General Assembly, and has served in a number of legal and community leadership positions.
