When Andrea Wilson Woods first became a patient advocate, she shied away from telling her story even though she founded a nonprofit in her sister’s name. Due to a mountain of grief and a desire for privacy, Andrea discussed the facts about liver cancer, not what motivated her to stand up for patients and caregivers. One day, when fighting for a bill in Congress, she saw someone’s eyes glaze over. That’s when she realized: numbers don’t cause change; personal narratives do. Because in the end, we all become stories.
