It is no secret that the elders in the over 15,000 nursing homes in the US are particularly vulnerable to the spread of the coronavirus. While initially beginning in a nursing home in Washington State, there are now countless stories of infection and death. While initially the virus was said to target those who are older, sick, and with critical underlying conditions, that is no longer the case. However, the nursing home environment itself is one that is ripe for spread of infection, and in the case of COVID-19, a deadly infection at that. It has only been during isolated natural disasters (Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Irma) that our frail, vulnerable nursing home residents have garnered this kind of attention. Today's guest is also one of our hosts, who has spent her career working in the nursing home environment. She is well versed with the challenges faced by healthcare workers, residents and families alike during this challenging times.
