Episode Description

The one-year anniversary of George Floyd's death is a perfect time to explore the new tsunami of youth activism and to ask: is it misguided and naive or a breath of fresh air and hope? Today's guests, Laura Pellegrini and Stefano Da Frè, Co-Directors and Producers of “The Day I Had To Grow Up", a Documentary About Youth Activism, say “George Floyd’s death brought forth a new wave of activism towards racial discrimination. It marked a moment in American society where marches were joined by people from all walks of life." The film showcases 6 activists and the events that shaped their political lives, including: the Parkland shooting, student debt, women's roles, the climate crisis, money and politics, social media, BLM and more. These activists give impassioned speeches about the causes they believe in. But, although they are stirring and articulate, do they really know enough about these issues, from the perspective of their short lives, to tell political, educational and corporate leaders they're wrong and to call for the changes they want? Do they deserve to be listened to just because they will be living in a future that they say we grownups have messed up? The documentary won 1st place (Special Jury Prize) at the Prague International Film Festival - a top-level film festival in Europe and is officially in a BAFTA Qualified Film Festival (Documentary Category) at Carmarthen Bay Film Festival, Wales, UK.
