For over 30 years, Duany has been at the forefront of the New Urbanism, a movement promoting mixed-use, traditional neighborhood planning over the segregated-use suburban sprawl seen worldwide. His design philosophy has advocated for urban growth through compact, pedestrian-oriented, transit-friendly communities that continue to shape policy and influence new sustainability codes for the future of our cities. He has tested these ideas in more than 300 built projects and will share the lessons he has learned and the ways we can work towards a more sustainable future for all.

Carie Penabad
Carie Penabad is an architect, urban designer and educator. A graduate of both the University of Miami School of Architecture and Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Penabad is principal of the Miami-based architecture firm of CÚRE & PENABAD The work of the firm is dedicated to creating an architecture of place where the design of buildings and the making of better cities is inextricably linked. The firm has received numerous awards including nearly twenty American Institute of Architects prizes. Most recently, the firm received the prestigious Emerging Voices award from the Architectural League of New York. This international competition recognizes individuals with a distinct design voice and a significant body of realized work. Parallel to her practice, Penabad is engaged in teaching, writing and research. She is currently a Professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture; and in 2013 was appointed the Louis I Kahn Visiting Assistant Professor at Yale University. Her publications include Marion Manley: Miami’s First Women Architect (University of Georgia Press, 2010); Call to Order: Sustaining Simplicity in Architecture (ORO Publishers, 2018) and the forthcoming book: Made in Miami/Hecho en Miami (ORO Publishers, 2023).
