Being in charge isn't always easy. But this week's Communication Nation guest, Gilbert, Arizona Mayor John Lewis, makes it look that way! With a population of nearly 225,000, the town of Gilbert boasts the recent honors of the 5th safest community in the nation (according to Business Insider) and the 36th best place to live in the nation (Money Magazine). Gilbert, Arizona is positioning itself to become a national leader in Digital Government. By unlocking public records, maximizing social media outreach and utilizing high-quality, dynamic video story-telling, the Gilbert Digital team is connecting with residents, staff and visitors by providing them with tools to become more involved in their community and assist with their daily lives. Modeled after New York City, Gilbert’s digital initiatives are focused on communication, technology, transparency and collaborative community development. The Digital Communications department was created exactly one year ago with the hiring of the Town’s first Chief Digital Officer. This year, the office created and premiered the first-ever Digital State of the Town, a 22-minute documentary produced entirely in-house. This allowed people from Gilbert, across Arizona and around the country to view the address from their home, desktop, or even their phones, without having to attend an event. You can watch the video at the Town’s website: State of the Town: Gilbert,AZ Join guest Mayor Lewis and host Jill Schiefelbein as we discuss how digital technologies have changed the way governments operate.

Effective communication is often the difference between success and failure. Do you feel confident communicating when the stakes are high? Are you ready to get up in front of any audience at a moment's notice? Do you realize that not saying anything is communicating something? "Communication Nation" will expand your understanding of different communication practices and how they affect day-to-day business operations and relationships. At the root of every management and relational issue lies a communication problem, but many don't understand how communication affects an organization's bottom line. Show topics have a direct impact on business productivity and profitability. We bring these issues to the surface, educating and giving practical advice that can be immediately applied in personal and professional contexts. That's "Communication Nation."

With statistics indicating that only 30% of the population will make the choice to be happy, Cindy Caldwell instantly realized that meant 70% will never be happy and will go to their graves never having experienced a happy and fulfilled life. What a sobering statistic, and not a positive one to begin a bio, a greeting, or a talk. But it hits us in the face with reality, and the odds are you are one of the 70%. That’s when Cindy’s passion prompted her to brand herself “The Happiness Queen” and make it her life’s purpose and mission to guide women to own their life and create the life of their dreams. The odds are that you need to understand how to live a life of authentic happiness and that you need to learn now. The good news is that there are but a few easily understood and doable steps to allow everyone to become a part of the 30 percent. My career in broadcasting has taken me many places across the country, and one interesting stop in early my weather career was in “Tornado Alley” at KCEN-TV in central Texas. I certainly saw some big-time severe weather during my tenure there, but the most dangerous storms I've ever covered were actually in Mississippi during grad school, when I worked for WTVA-TV and WCBI-TV. After several years in the heat of south it was time for a major change in temperatures, so it was off to WJBK-TV - in Detroit! As you can imagine, in Michigan the focus shifts dramatically to forecasting the kind of fierce winter weather the Great Lakes are so famous for. It was in Detroit that I was honored to receive several broadcast awards, including an Emmy. Despite those years up on the Canadian border, with out a doubt the biggest snowstorms I’ve ever forecasted were right here in Maryland, during the infamous “Snowpocalypse” blizzards of 2009-2010! That triple-header of record smashing storms was simply stunning, and certainly helped prepare me for my current role of Chief Meteorologist here at ABC 2. One thing that remains the same no matter where I’ve worked is that I always like hearing from you the viewer. These days television is a truly “two way” street and I want to hear what you have to say, show off your photos and videos, and especially, see your storm reports! One place you can easily communicate with me (even while I am on-air) is at my Facebook “Like” Page at this link . You can also message me on Twitter anytime here @ABC2Weather or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org . Another reason I hope you’ll reach out to me is because I love speaking to various groups and schools all over the Maryland. In fact, I am also a professional member of the National Speakers Association, so please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can come do a presentation for your group! Before entering the world of television, I served as a navigator in the United States Coast Guard – earning the Humanitarian Service Medal and Special Operations Ribbon for missions off the coasts of Haiti and Cuba. (At one point I even spent some time on duty at the Curtis Bay shipyards here in Baltimore). After the military I attended Salisbury University on the G.I. Bill, earning my Bachelor's Degree in Geography / Atmospheric Science. I went on to earn my Master of Science degree in Geosciences at Mississippi State University, and was awarded the American Meteorological Society’s "Seal of Approval" less than a year after graduating. When I'm not tracking the next storm bearing down on the Chesapeake, I enjoy working out with my CrossFit friends, swimming in Swim Across America , and stand up paddleboarding ( SUP ) in the Bay and especially in OC! Since my first grammar school art class, it was obvious that I am a "creative." Unlike a lot of creatives, I also really enjoy the analytical. Owning my own marketing business, 910 West, gives me the best of both worlds. I use my creative skills in the work that my team and I do building WordPress Websites, designing logos, business cards and any kind of marketing piece you can imagine. I use the analytical delivering SEO that helps our clients get found for the right keywords and drives traffic to their websites. It is this mix of the creative and analytical skills that makes my company 910 West different from our internet marketing competitors—we don't just make things look pretty or create technically awesome pieces that no human wants to read. We create smartly designed marketing pieces that get results. View Guest page
