Businesses have dramatically increased their use of contingent workers over the past decade due to the struggle with rising labor costs and the need for a workforce that can quickly adapt to market conditions. It is estimated that approximately 30% of the North American workforce is either contingent, contractual or a temporary in some regard and that this labor trend will increase to 50% by 2016. Organizations are also quickly adopting contingent workforce strategies due to regulatory pressures and to simply bring their organization to the next stage of maturity. With such a large percentage of the workforce traversing into this realm it is critical for organizations to understand the inherent risks, benefits, challenges, and potential solutions to assist them with effectively growing and managing their contingent talent base.
