Should small businesses be offering workplace wellness programs? Should they continue to offer health insurance or should they send their employees to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance marketplaces? How do small businesses differ from large corporations in how they handle health insurance? The ACA has been a game-changer for employers. It has allowed companies to provide bigger incentives for employees' healthy behaviors. However, there has been controversy over whether this is a good or bad development. Small businesses continue to pay more for employee health insurance, compared with large corporations, because they represent potentially greater risk to insurers. However, insurers must spend at least 80 percent of small-business premiums on medical costs. If they do not, they have to refund the balance. More small businesses are gravitating toward high-deductible plans for their employees. There are advantages and disadvantages to this, and we will discuss both.
