Dexter Shurney, MD

Dexter Shurney, MD is the chief medical director and executive director for Global Benefits, Health and Wellness for Cummins, Inc. Prior to this position, Shurney was the chief medical director of the Employee Health Plan for Vanderbilt University and Medical Center. During his tenure at Vanderbilt, he held joint faculty appointments as assistant clinical professor, Division of Internal Medicine and Public Health, and adjunct faculty, Owens Graduate School of Management. Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen appointed Shurney as chair of The Diabetes Prevention and Health Improvement Board in 2007. In addition, Shurney served as senior vice president and chief medical officer for Healthways, health policy strategist in the Division of Global Government Affairs for the biotechnology company Amgen Inc. and chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Shurney is board-certified in general preventative medicine and public health. He co-authored the how-to book for employers, “Integrating Wellness into Your Disease Management Programs.”
