Barbara Johnson, RN, Former Minneapolis City Council Pres.


Barbara served as President of the City Council for 12 years. Elected as a member in 1997, she served as Chair of the Ways and Means Committee until 2006. She is the longest serving President in City Council history. A registered nurse, Barbara has worked for the United States Veterans Administration, U of MN Medical Center, Fairview Hospital and Hennepin County Medical Center, with primary focus in mental health. A strong supporter of the importance of MPLS as the economic engine of the region, Barbara partnered with the business community and has been a strong presence at the MN Legislature. She has served on the Metropolitan Parks & Open Space Commission and the Mississippi National River & Recreation Commission, appointed by the US Secretary of the Interior. She currently serves on the Board of the Minnesota Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA), appointed by Governor Mark Dayton. Barbara and her husband, Duane, an attorney, have three daughters and six grandchildren.
