Mathew Portell


Mathew Portell has dedicated his life to education as a teacher, instructional coach, teacher mentor, and school administrator. His leadership in the field of education is notable nationwide. He recently started his fourth year as Principal of Nashville's Fall-Hamilton Elementary School, a nationally recognized innovative model school for trauma-informed school practices. Mathew also blogs for the monthly Education Week series "Learning is Social and Emotional". In addition, he contributes to Edutopia in a multitude of ways and is the founder of #TraumaInformedChat and the Trauma Informed Schools Network. Earlier in his multi-faceted career in education, he combined his passion for literacy and cycling, and founded the award-winning nonprofit Ride for Reading. The organization promotes literacy and healthy living through the national distribution of books (nearly 500,000 to date) via bicycle to underserved children.
