Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 18, where she served for 24 years first as a private, nurse and then doctor. Upon retiring from the service, she went into private practice as an ophthalmologist in Ottumwa, Iowa where she continues to reside today with her husband, Curt. In 2010, then-Gov. Terry Branstad appointed her to serve as the Iowa Department of Public Health director. She was elected in 2018 to the Iowa Senate, representing District 41 before being elected to represent Iowa’s Second Congressional District in 2020 in a race decided by six votes out of 394,625 cast. In Congress, she serves on the Education and Labor, Homeland Security and Veterans' Affairs committees.
