Dr. Joel Kupersmith

Dr. Joel Kupersmith is a Professor of Medicine and Director of Georgetown University Veterans Initiatives. He has lectured widely and has over 170 publications, including three books. His earlier research work concerned heart disease and more recently he has published on health policy, in particular related to veterans. Dr. Kupersmith was a Professor Medicine at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and subsequently was dean of Texas Tech University’s School of Medicine and Biomedical Graduate School, and CEO of its faculty practice plan. He then directed the VA’s vast medical research program from 2005-2013, the longest tenure ever. Under his transformational leadership accomplishments included the Million Veteran Program, now the world’s largest health system genetic repository; pioneering research projects, development of new research methods, long needed VA research infrastructure improvements, and unique, first time collaborative efforts with the Department of Defense and others. A component of VA research won a 2010 Presidential Baldrige Award. Dr. Kupersmith is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and has been a member of the NIH’s Council for Translational Science and the White House Council of Science.
