Amy Friedman

Amy Friedman grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and has an undergraduate degree from Barnard College, Columbia University and an MA in creative writing from City College, New York. She is an author, co-author, editor and writing teacher whose work has appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times, Salon and the Toronto Globe and Mail. She is the author of Kick the Dog and Shoot the Cat, Nothing Sacred: A Conversation with Feminism, Tell Me a Story, The Spectacular Gift, and Desperado’s Wife: A Memoir. Amy also is the writer/producer of the award-winning audiobook series, Tell Me a Story, based on her long-running syndicated newspaper feature for Universal Press Syndicate.

This year’s collection, Dream Catchers, represents the work of students from POPS Clubs in all around the country. The book discusses how kids, like their incarcerated loved ones, suffer due to institutionalized prejudice and stigmatization. It also discusses how kids with a parent in prison are just like other kids, and The healing power of self-expression through writing and artwork.
