Join us this week to meet the leaders from Rise Challenge Illinois. This program, a partnership between Environmental Education Association of Illinois, Earth Force, Federal Emergency Management Agency Region 5, and the Association of State Floodplain Managers Foundation, engages students in exploring their local communities to identify real-world environmental issues and develop solutions and action plans for making their communities more resilient.

Banan Garada is a former co-chair of the Federal Emergency Management Agency Youth Preparedness Councils, initiating national preparedness efforts, such as the creation of a young children’s storybook, personally praised by the First Lady of the United States, along with the Safety Matters Bi-Monthly Webinar Series, as spotlighted on the front cover of her local paper, which connected leaders from top governmental agencies to local communities.

Abbie Enlund currently serves as the Executive Director for the Environmental Education Association of Illinois. Prior to this position Enlund held a wide range of informal education positions in both Illinois and Wisconsin. Organizations that Enlund has worked for include Peoria County Farm Bureau, Bradley University, Aldo Leopold Nature Center, University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education, Central Wisconsin Environmental Station and Midwest Renewable Energy Association. Theodore Johnson

Theo Johnson is a graduate of Urbana High School in Urbana, Illinois, and a student at the University of Chicago. He served for two years on the Illinois State Board of Education Student Advisory Council, where he researched achievement gaps, tutoring, and the US Census. During high school, he was involved in community organizations like Urbana High School Habitat for Humanity and the Champaign-Urbana Youth Climate Justice Forum, served on the campaign of Scott Bennett for State Senate, and served as an instructional assistant in the Future City after-school program for middle school students. Fiona Munro

Fiona Munro is the Outreach and Education Coordinator for Sola Gratia Farm, a mission-based, not-for-profit urban vegetable farm located in Urbana, Illinois. She began as a volunteer on the farm and has been engaged in all aspects of its work, including in the field, at the market, and in the wider community. In her current role, she assists with administration of Solidarity Gardens CU, a collaborative initiative to support gardeners in producing fresh, local vegetables for themselves and others in the Champaign-Urbana community, and the C-U Farm to School project. She graduated from Knox College in 2020 with a BA in Environmental Studies and Creative Writing
