Katherine Flannery Dering is the second of ten children. Her younger brother, Paul, was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 16. Katherine is author of ‘Shot in the Head: A Sister’s Memoir, A Brother’s Struggle’. She writes about her experiences caring for her brother and speaks about the role of the family in caring for a person with mental illness. Her poetry and essays have appeared in Inkwell Magazine, as well as what she calls several small journals, and in an anthology of essays about coping with mental illness.
