First guest is Hall of Fame Jockey Chris McCarron who just won the Lafitt Pincay Jr. Award and will receive the honor in ceremonies at Del Mar Aug. 21. For the first time, the Pincay Award will be part of a special relationship with one of racing's most important charities—the Winners Foundation, which for more than 30 years has aided those in racing adversely affected by substance abuse and-or mental health issues. Despite winning two Kentucky Derbies, Preakness and Belmont Stakes, Chris McCarron is yet venturing into a new phase of his ever-changing career and has joined Team Valor in an effort to grow ownership in the sport. Winner of the Eclipse Award as outstanding apprentice jockey in 1974 and the Eclipse Award as outstanding jockey in 1980, Chris McCarron led North America by races won three times and by money won four times. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1989. Not one to rest on his laurels, he founded the North American Racing Academy in Lexington, Kentucky. We go back to the days when he was the Director of Publicity at Turfway Park and he would bring me in as part of the Press Team for the Spiral Stakes. Del Mar is in the spotlight this Saturday. The 1,000,000 dollars Pacific Classic -G1-has drawn an exceptional field headed by Champions California Chrome and Beholder. Also on the card are the 300,000 dollars Del Mar Oaks -G1- and the 250,000 dollars -G2- Del Mar Handicap..
