Dr. Bill Thomas on Changing Aging and Transforming Living Environments for Older Adults
August 3, 2020
Hosted by Phyllis Ayman, MS/SLP, CDP, CADDCT, CDCM, CMDCP and Rubina Chaudhary, BSc, MBA
Dr. Bill Thomas is a visionary who has totally transformed how we think about and design living spaces for older adults as they continue on life's journey into their advancing years. Studies have proven that how we perceive aging, to a very large degree, determines how we age, Dr. Thomas says. with the accepted narrative of aging as one of decline, disease, and disability, it's difficult to look upon advancing years in a positive light. Dr. Thomas challenges the negative stereotypes in hopes of changing the narrative. "It's the story that matters," he says. "How people interpret their experience goes a long way to determining their wellbeing. So I decided to go out into the world and start changing the story of aging. We believe in possibility, change, growth, optimism, spirit and soul." Dr. Thomas traces the origins of his revolutionary ideas and how they are applied to redesign and create a total shift in attitude and care in a nursing home environment.
