Confidence is a belief in oneself, the conviction that one has the ability to meet life's challenges and to succeed—and the willingness to act accordingly. Being confident requires a realistic sense of one’s capabilities and feeling secure in that knowledge. Projecting confidence helps people gain credibility, make a strong first impression, deal with pressure, and tackle personal and professional challenges. It’s also an attractive trait, as confidence helps put others at ease. Confidence is not an innate, fixed characteristic. It’s an ability that can be acquired and improved over time. Arrogance is a trait that society often values and rewards, particularly in arenas such as politics and business. We often think of successful people as those who are able to push themselves out in front of others to win any competition. Whether it’s getting more votes, more customers, or more points on the basketball court, the arrogant show little care or concern for whom they leave behind in the dust. If you’ve got an arrogant coworker, you know how frustrating it can be to be constantly outshined when the boss comes around with bonus checks. If you happen to be in a romantic relationship with an arrogant partner, you can feel similarly frustrated with all the pushiness and need for domination. Dr. Gary Bell

Dr. Gary E. Bell, Ed.D, L.M.F.T. has a private counseling psychology practice in Corona, California where he works with people of all ages and life situations. He has been licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California since 2004. Additionally, Dr. Bell teaches at various cities and academies to police, fire, and city employees regarding psychology, crisis work and motivation. He has conducted over 15,000 hours of therapy and crisis work. Dr. Bell is also a certified Mediator including his work for the Family Courts. He responds to Police, Fire and Community crisis intervention 24/7 on-call (i.e., suicide, fire, bank robberies, shootings, major traumatic events, etc.) as a Deputy of Psychology with the Counseling Team International. He is on-call for national and international crisis (i.e. flooding, terrorism, major catastrophes, cruise ship disasters, etc.). Dr. Bell is a CAMFT Certified Supervisor and contributes to Women’s First magazine for the Marriage S.O.S. section. He works quickly and efficiently to effectively help all his clients.
