We all yearn for a return of the 1990s when the US economy was the envy of the world: 20+ million new jobs, soaring investment & productivity, low inflation. How did the US do it? Tax cuts? Slashing government spending? Balancing the budget? “None of the above” says Dr. Paul A. London, Chief Economist of The Stern Group. That “glorious” prosperity resulted from decades of political struggles that brought real competition to key industries: transport, steel, retail, finance, telecom. This liberated “people’s vital energies,” allowed new entrants, stimulated innovation & forced prices down. While US pols & pundits give lip service to competition, they focus on taxes, interest rates & deficits. "Wrong," says London, what is needed is to open more uncompetitive sectors—notably healthcare. Europe too could benefit from applying ”The Competition Solution.” Can it work in today’s business climate? What roles should government play? Prior to founding her own firm, Té headed the Industrial & Healthcare Practices of FIND's Strategic Consulting & Research Group and taught at the Zicklin School of Business (Baruch/CUNY). She was the Editor of Business International’s flagship newsletter and helped create its country risk service.
An NYC native, Té is active with Citizen Action, the URJ’s Commission on Social Action, and NY Neighbors for American Values (defending religious freedom, diversity and equality). She holds a Masters from Columbia’s School of International & Public Affairs and a BA from Goucher College. She’s an avid bike rider, theater buff and farmers market supporter—and the bemused owner of 2 demanding felines.
