Our show this week will focus on plastic surgery. Most people think of plastic surgery as simply face lifts and breast augmentation. Although those are two areas of plastic surgery there is much more to this highly specialized procedure. Other aspects include scar revision, skin cancer, tissue expansion, hand surgery, breast reconstruction for certain breast cancer survivors as well as cleft lip and cleft palate procedures. Dr. Jeffrey LaGrasso an international cosmetic surgeon will talk to us about various plastic surgeries, his work with children with cleft lips and palates and discuss his new book – The Plastic Surgery Diet…. Rick Barnabo

Rick Barnabo

Rick Barnabo received his BBA at Western Michigan University and is Certified as a Personal Trainer and Cancer Exercise Trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine. He is also a Certified Wellness Coach and Fitness Coach through Wellcoaches Inc. and endorsed by A.C.S.M. Rick was a former Wellness Coordinator and Fitness Specialist for Canyon Physical Therapy and Aquatic Rehabilitation.

Rick provides personal training instruction to private clientele. He has worked with and trained a variety of individuals ranging in age from middle teens to clients in their nineties. The majority of his clients have or have had physical or medical challenges including but not limited to Diabetes, Heart Disease, Cancer, Arthritis and a variety of orthopedic conditions. Rick works with and trains Cancer survivors from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. He provides Wellness coaching to private clientele using a variety of techniques with an emphasis on Positive Psychology, Appreciative Inquiry and Motivational Interviewing.

Rick is a public speaker on a variety of topics including “How to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight for life.” “The Relationship between Exercise and Cancer,” “Exercise and its effect on the Brain,” “Aging and Exercise” and “Exercise is Medicine.”

Rick has had several articles published in Health Care Focus Magazine and AZ Net News. He has also studied and developed worksite wellness programs.

Judi Beischel

Judi Beischel is a Department Commander for the American Legion. She joined the Coast Guard reserve in 1973 and trained in Yorktown, VA. She served at the Oswego, N.Y. Coast Guard Station and later served out of the Phoenix unit where she had duty out of San Diego and Los Angeles on the Small Boat Ops Search and Rescue Teams. She received meritorious service and expert marksman ribbons and qualified as a Coxswain on both 30 and 41 foot boats. She attained First Class Boatswain Mate and was honorably discharged in October of 1980. Judi served as Area Vice President for local 8519 of the Communication Workers of America. While VP she organized the Special Service Technicians to wire the Phoenix VA Hospital for the PT Phone Home project which provided phones in every patients room. She has served on the allocation board for the United Way of Arizona and received U.S. West’s “ Theodore Vail “ lifesaving award for administering the Heimlich maneuver. She retired from quest in 2001 after 34 years of service. Judi is a member of WIMSA, Women In Military Service to America and has worked with MANA house a transitional home for Veterans experiencing homelessness. Dr. Jeffrey LaGrasso

Our guest this week is Dr. Jeffrey LaGrasso. Dr. LaGrasso is a world renowned plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He received his General Surgical training at the New York Hospital of Queens and continued his training at Albany Medical Center. He was later selected to complete a prestigious Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, an honor only a select few plastic surgeons receive. Dr. LaGrasso received international acclaim for his involvement in the separation of the conjoined twins in Los Angeles in 2006. Carol Michaels is the founder and creator of Recovery Fitness®, an exercise program designed to help cancer patients recover from surgery and treatments. She owns and operates Recovery Fitness and Carol Michaels Fitness in Short Hills, New Jersey and is a trailblazer in the area of cancer and exercise. She has worked with physicians and other health professionals to develop her recovery fitness program, which is currently offered at her studio, hospitals, cancer support organizations, and community centers. She understands the needs of a cancer survivor and developed a practical program to help them reach their goals. Carol is a Cancer Exercise Specialist and consultant and has been a fitness professional for more than 18 years. She received her degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and is certified by The Cancer Exercise Training Institute, American Council on Exercise, American College of Sports Medicine, and is a member of ACSM and IDEA. Carol is a speaker for corporate wellness programs, fundraisers, and community events on fitness and health issues. She is on the advisory board of Living Beyond Breast Cancer, and is an ambassador for HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation. Carol has appeared on health related television programs. She is an author of a chapter in the e-book called Ten to Thrive. She was a columnist for PFP magazine, and has written for The American Academy of Health and Fitness, The National Lymphedema Network, and numerous cancer publications. The American Council on Exercise and Life Fitness recognized her as a Trainer to Watch in 2011. Personal Fitness Professional honored her as the 2012 PFP Trainer of the Year. Brad Steiner

Brad Steiner is an internationally respected professor of unarmed and armed close combat and self-defense. In 1975 he founded the comprehensive American Combato System of martial arts. Steiner is the preeminent authority on the world war two methods of close combat, and has combined all of the key systems of that era with the most practical aspects of ju-jutsu, Chinese boxing, kenpo karate and Indian varmannie, as well as modern weaponry.
