Episode Description

Lifestyle writer and journalist Abigail Stone turns the tables this week and interviews “Matters of Design” host, Demitri Sgourakis. Abigail entices Demitri to reveal how he transitioned from his modest and artistic beginnings as a painter, potter and sculptor into a cutting-edge interior designer. Demitri reflects on his days at the Fashion Institute of Technology and his early years designing at an east coast furniture showroom to his journey west where he became the design director for an international brand, working with an A-List clientele. Next, Demitri offers perspective on his own design process sharing the challenges involved in working with a variety of people, places and scenarios that make every new consultation both interesting and provocative. Finally, he shares how he channeled his life-long interest in art, fashion and interior design into a new luxury lifestyle brand, DEMITRI CHRISTIAN, INC., which he launched in 2013.

Demitri Christian Sgourakis

Demitri Sgourakis is one the most accomplished designers in Los Angeles. Born in New Jersey, he studied Interior Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, and attended their Art and Architecture program in England and their French Costume and Design school in Paris. After an apprenticeship with legendary decorator Bette Baer of Schwartz Furniture and Design, Demitri relocated to Los Angeles where he became Design Director for the international home furnishings brand Kreiss before founding his own firm, Demitri Christian Interior Design, Inc. Demitri is best known for his modern approach to an eclectic interior. His knowledge and appreciation for the past combined with an eye for fashion forward style, has resulted in fresh, yet classic, environments that come together by expertly mixing a combination of contemporary and antique furnishings. He believes a room is never really done; that it should not only reflect the client through design and things they love but also grow along with that person as they evolve. Whether designing in the neutral palates for the collections he has shepherded or in the rich color statements he creates for his private clients, Demitri's respect for timeless tradition, quality, and attention to detail is ever-present in his work. His interest and passion for history, art and design as well as an appreciation for the esthetic values across cultures inspires him to be a dynamic host of Matters of Design.

Paul L'Esperance Daelen Cory

L’Esperance Design is a multi-award winning company whose forward thinking and innovative design runs the gamut from historic restorations to futuristic design. Design partners, Paul L’Esperance and Daelen Cory marry top-notch design and decor with innovative technologies. They have restored numerous buildings on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places including the Britt Mansion in Los Angeles, the Leland Stanford Mansion and the Governor’s Mansion in Sacramento. Private restorations include the Senator’s House and the Julia Morgan Cowboy/Bunk house at Hearst Ranch in San Simeon. This past November, L’Esperance Design participated in the remaking of Beverly Hills Greystone Mansion as a design show house. Jamie Adler

Jamie Adler is President, CEO and Brand Director of Phyllis Morris Originals, a company founded in West Hollywood, California by her mother Phyllis Morris in 1953. Following Morris' passing, the company has progressed under Adler’s leadership with her stamp on the legendary furniture company through the addition of furniture, textiles, lighting, wallpapers and rugs she designs for the Circa division. Today, Phyllis Morris Originals continues to be known as one of the foremost manufacturers of custom high-end furnishings in the world. Adler was educated in design at UCLA and has worked in the Phyllis Morris Originals showroom for more than 25 years. Martyn Lawrence Bullard

Martyn Lawrence Bullard is consistently named one of the world’s top 100 interior designers by Architectural Digest and is featured permanently in Elle Décor’s A-List top 25 tastemakers in the world. He was also the recipient of the highly prestigious Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year Award in 2010. Although known mainly for his high-end residential design, he has also lent his talent to commercial and hospitality. Eric Evavold

Eric Evavold was born and raised in Southern California. Eric has a BA degree from CSULB in Liberal Studies and Speech Communication. In the late 90s he served as a Broadway Theater District docent for the Los Angeles Conservancy and became acquainted with Museum of Neon Art at that time. Later, as a community outreach coordinator and manager of the Design Within Reach store in Beverly Hills, he invited MONA to host its 2006 annual fundraiser there. Eric has also been one of the tour guides for the The Neon Cruise of Los Angeles. In late 2013 Eric was nominated to the board of Museum of Neon Art. Kalina Ivanov

Production Designer KALINA IVANOV most recently designed season two of the Golden Globe-nominated TV show Smash. She earned Emmy and an Art Director’s Guild Awards for her work on Michael Sucsy’s film Grey Gardens. She also designed his next film, The Vow. She has had a long collaboration with director Robert Redford, beginning as the storyboard artist on Quiz Show and The Horse Whisperer, culminating as the production designer on The Conspirator. Other notable film designs include the Oscar-nominated Little Miss Sunshine, Rabbit Hole, Maid Of Honor, Smoke, among others. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, she escaped with her parents during the height of communism, settling in New York. She received her BFA & MFA from NYU TSOA graduating from both with honors. Alex Koleszar

Alex Koleszar completed roughly 30 canvases in oil from ages 11 to 14. Years later at a personal crisis point, he rededicated himself to his art as part of his physical and emotional recovery. Chase Langford

Chase Langford is a Los Angeles-based artist well known for his geographically inspired paintings. He studied cartography earning a BA from UC Santa Barbara in Geography then worked as a cartographer at UCLA. Starting with his Map Paintings he literally reinterpreted geography by taking selected features from maps and filled in the reconfigured shapes in a flurry of color and movement creating a fresh take on familiar geographic forms.
