Episode Description

Of course I always want my listeners to tune in every Wednesday for Barely Controlled Radio, but this edition will be one that puts me over the top through the airwaves. From NFL wide receiver to NFL’s “most hated” player to Mirror Ball Champion to Ironman competitor to television analyst, my guest has done it all. The sky’s the limit for this great man. I’m kind of sick to my stomach (in a good way of course) with all he’s accomplished, so let’s get to the behind-the-scenes radio show of the past and current life of the man, Hines Ward. We all as humans have much to be proud of with our many talents. This man, however, is living a life that so many of us truly have dreams about. Yes he's famous, but the things he has accomplished are extremely competitive and take some serious work. Let's get to the show as Hines Ward gives us exactly the insight we are looking for in a decorated radio show guest. Enjoy! For more background information, check out www.hinesward.com...

This is an opinion-based hour with topics that range from relationships to sports to pets to current issues/events. There is no topic too controversial. However, we do tend to avoid race, religion, and politics unless it is discussed on a very broad basis. Being a former NFL football player, and one that still has most of his brain cells, I have experienced the highest of highs in winning two Super Bowl titles after mastering a degree in journalism, as well as attacking some low lows head-on. My show exemplifies what it is like to take a stand on any issue, but there is plenty of self-deprecation. I have no problem siding with someone or completely putting him/her in his/her place by believing in what I truly believe in. I never said I'm always right, but I sure have no problem stating what I BELIEVE is right and why.

Jeff Reed

Jeff Reed, two-time Super Bowl champion and former placekicker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, grew his roots and found his love for sports in Charlotte, North Carolina. By the age of five, he was already playing soccer, which became the center of his attention for the next 13 years. In his junior year of high school, while being the captain of the varsity soccer team, the head football coach at East Mecklenburg High School saw his football potential and gave him a brochure for a kicking camp. Since switching into football, he broke his high school’s record for longest field with a 54-yarder, later joining the University of North Carolina Tar Heels as a walk-on. Despite only getting playing time for his last two years of five in college, he was their team captain.

Reed first entered the National Football League in 2002 as a part of the New Orleans Saints. In that same year, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he was active for the next nine years. In that time, he had a career field goal percentage of 82.2%, and he’s second in all-time points scored by a Steeler. He played in Super Bowl XL in Detroit and Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, both of which the Steelers walked away from with a world championship ring. Since becoming a free agent in 2011 after Reed was released by the Seattle Seahawks, he has started a successful sports, life, and random-topic show called ‘Barely Controlled Radio,’ is a motivational speaker, and a radio personality on WFNZ-AM in Charlotte.
