In a sportsmanlike gesture, Oaklawn said last week it would consider adding $500,000 to the Rebel purse and splitting it into two $750,000 divisions when it became clear that an abundance of horses were looking for a Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) prep after the San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park was canceled. Vic Stauffer

One of the most recognized and experienced voices in Thoroughbred racing has been in Oaklawn’s announcer’s booth since their 2017 racing season. Vic Stauffer, who has called more than 40,000 races at nearly a dozen tracks across the country, is just the sixth track announcer in Oaklawn’s storied, 115-year history. Stauffer was the track announcer at Hollywood Park in California for 13 years. Before that he called races at Gulfstream Park, Hialeah, Golden Gate Fields and others. He began his announcing career in 1985 at Garden State Park in New Jersey. In addition to his announcing work, he has earned two Eclipse Awards for radio broadcasts. Rosemary Homeister Jr.

It was in 1992 that Rosemary Homeister Jr. achieved a first for a female rider by winning the Eclipse Award as the outstanding apprentice jockey. That breakthrough honor signaled the start of a highly successful career from 1992-2015 that saw her win 2,784 races. She was born on July 5, 1972, in Hollywood, Fla., and was destined to be a jockey. Her father, James Homeister, was a rider who won more than 500 races, while her mother, Rosemary Homeister Sr., rode in 29 races from 1977-81. Homeister began exercising horses and breaking horses as a teenager.
