Eric Jay Dolin’s latest book is Fur, Fortune and Empire. His is an epic history of beaver, buffalo, seal and sea otter. Fur animal populations were heavily exploited and only survived because market forces drove hunters westward. Finally on the west coast sea otter are so over harvested that many of their populations never return.
