What the Food?

While there are many approaches to address addiction and recovery, most do not address the direct correlation between food and recovery. People suffering from alcohol or drug addiction may not realize how important their diet can be, especially in the early stages of recovery. Most alcohol or drug addicts are used to very poor diets as a result of their addiction and many end up with serious nutritional deficiencies.
A healthy diet means feeling better, having more sustained energy and even thinking more clearly. Getting the right amount of nutrition can help stabilize a person’s mood which is very important for addicts who are dealing with many volatile emotions. Instead of comfort eating or becoming addicted to junk food, a person in rehab needs to understand the importance of healthy food and its role in their ability to recover. What can people do to help their loved ones or themselves? Educate themselves to navigate grocery stores, buying clean, organic, non-GMO foods.
As a health advocate and food activist for over 20 years, Karen is passionate about sharing her knowledge of clean and healthy eating with her clients, family and friends. Karen is the author of God Made Organics, NOT GMOs and most recently What the Food, Cooking Organically, and a co-founder of Harmony and Heart Retreats. Also, in the works is a documentary titled What the Food, chronicling how nutrition effects addicts in recovery and recidivism rates.
Of Karen’s 13 grandchildren, nearly all of them present with food related allergies, ADD, ADHD, OCD, depression and suicidal tendencies. Her 23-year young granddaughter died as a direct result of being prescribed Oxycontin and her resulting addictions. Karen is passionate about helping people find their best health and have the ability to make their lives as full and rich as humanly possible in today’s toxic world.
Karen has been a yoga practitioner for over 30 years and instructor for over 10 years. As a long time yogini, she integrates what she has learned about doing yoga right AND wrong into teaching students safety and alignment with the principles of lyengar training. She teaches with compassion, attention to safety, and a genuine interest in helping you to be your healthiest.
What the Food centers around eating the highest quality foods to nourish yourself at a cellular level, having a greater opportunity to live fully in the only vessel you have to traverse this lifetime.
