Resiliency; a term very misunderstood and communicated in the BCM/DR industry. Some believe it's a product you buy off a shelf while others think they can hire someone to come in for a short time and suddenly their organizations become resilient. But that's not the case. Resiliency is much deeper than that. This week's guest, Ken Simpson, a driving and pioneering expert on what resiliency really is, will discuss the topic in detail to help remove the misguided beliefs held by many BCM/DR professionals and by corporate leaders. We'll talk about Lessons Observed, rather than Lessons Learned, Black Swans and defining resiliency in its clearest terms.

Preparing for the Unexpected is about how people, organizations and communities plan, prepare, test, communicate and respond to sudden unplanned events such as natural and manmade disasters and crises. The show is for everyone who wants an understanding of how plans are created for individuals, organizations and communities and for anyone who wants to know what they can do in their own lives to help protect themselves from unexpected events.

There is a myth that disasters happen to others but in reality, they happen to everyone. It's just a matter of when and how well-prepared you are. The greater the level of awareness, communication and knowledge, the quicker one bounces back from adversity.

The overall aim of Preparing for the Unexpected is to reduce the suffering, effects and impacts caused as a result of disasters and unexpected life events by increasing knowledge and awareness of Business Contingency and Disaster Planning and related activities.

Alex Fullick, MBCI, CBCP, CBRA, v3ITIL

Alex Fullick is Founder and Managing Director of Stone Road Inc (StoneRoad) and has been working in the Business Continuity Management and Disaster Recovery industry for 20 years. During this time, Alex has been instrumental in developing, implementing and managing numerous initiatives, including Pandemic Planning, Policy development, large scale simulation tests, Business Continuity Plan development, Business Impact Assessments, maintenance programs and general Program and Project Management.

Alex holds his MBCI certification with the Business Continuity Institute (BCI), his CBCP with the Disaster Recovery Institute (DRI), is certified in ITIL Foundations and has a Certified Business Resiliency Auditor (CBRA) designation. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of Directors for The International Emergency Management Society (TIEMS).

He's presented at numerous conferences around the globe on various industry-related subjects including Orlando, Phoenix, Montreal, London (UK), Brisbane and Bucharest. He's authored several books including Heads in the Sand, Business Impact Analysis, Testing Business Continuity Plans and his latest Watch Your Step, which all focus on teaching individuals, organizations and communities about BCM and DR. He has also had articles published in trade publications.

S. Rosalind Baker, PMP

S. Rosalind has extensive experience as a project manager and technical architect in many industries including manufacturing, government, IT, finance and not for profit. As a member of the certification team for Microsoft she was considered to be a subject matter expert. Roz has acted as PM on several multi-million dollar initiatives, most notably, the replacement of a bank's entire suite of electronic banking applications, delivery of an SAP FICO solution to 5 international offices and a multi-system infrastructure upgrade. Since Roz started consulting in 1999, she has become very adept with PMBOK and its concepts as a trainer with the Project Management Training Institute and has a reputation for 'getting things done'. She's a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI), a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and earned her Juris Doctor (JD) from Queen's University. Prof. Meen Poudyal Chhetri

Prof. Chhetri is the President of Nepal Center for Disaster Management (NCDM) and Chairman of The International Emergency Management Society (TIEMS)’s paper Review Committee. He was awarded with AEI Australia Alumni Excellence Awards in 2014 by the Government of Australia and received the "DPNet-Nepal Award 2014" by the Government of Nepal in recognition to his significant contribution in the field of DRR. Prof. Chhetri authored two books namely; "Mitigation and Management of Floods in Nepal" and “Analysis of Nepalese Agriculture.” Prof. Chhetri completed his Post Doctorate Research Study on "Disaster Risk Reduction: Policy Implications for Nepal, Australia and Beyond" from Queensland Uni. of Technology, Brisbane, Australia in 2011. Prof. Chhetri earned his doctorate degree in Economics from the University of Vienna, Austria in 1995. He also holds an MA and Law degree. K. Harald Drager

K. Harald Drager, Oslo, Norway, is the founding member of the worldwide acting society TIEMS (The International Emergency Management Society - www.tiems.org), which he took the initiative to establish in 1993. He was the International Vice President of TIEMS since its inauguration until 2002, when he took over as TIEMS President, a position he was re-elected to for the 5th time in 2013. He specializes in international organizational development, emergency, disaster and risk management and project management. He has done consultancy work for numerous clients internationally, including the NATO and the European Commission. In 1983 and founded his own consultancy, AS QUASAR Consultants and later QUASAR Invest AS. Dr. Barbara Drewry Dr. Drewry received a B.A. in English Literature and a Post Graduate Degree in Speech Pathology. She worked at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto as a Speech Pathologist for 12 years before entering vet school. In 1993, five years after graduating from OVC, she purchased Royal City Animal Hospital. James Marshall has been in the Wholesale Fast Moving Consumer Goods sales and distribution business for 23 years and is currently the Director at North Coast Wholesale & Distribution in Lismore, Australia. Along with his wife Kate, he purchased the business in 2005 becoming owners. James invested a lot of time and money into the business and in 11 years have gone from having 3 staff and 1 truck to currently having 17 staff and 9 trucks. Alvaro Orrantia

Alvaro is a Systems Engineer (Hons) and MBA. For more than 20 years, he has been actively involved in the Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery and Information Security practices; as part of his experience, Alvaro successfully managed business continuity during the August 2003 blackout and SARS, the 2013 ice storm in southern Ontario, and Hurricane Matthew among others.

Janine Sakatch

Janine Sakatch worked as a reporter and editor for weekly and daily newspapers beginning in 1986 covering education and health for the Lethbridge Herald for seven years. During her career, she won the Alberta Teacher’s Association news writer of the year award four consecutive times; she also won a national award for a series she wrote on bullying in schools. In 2004, she left journalism for a career within corporate communications and has worked with Chinook Health, Alberta Health Services, and 3sHealth.
