Episode Description

The Economist named the Pill one of the "Seven Wonders of the Modern World." Now, it's part of the lives of 10.5 million American women. But how much do we know about the effects of synthetic hormones on our bodies? According to Holly Grigg-Spall author of Sweetening the Pill or How We Became Hooked on Hormonal Birth Control, “What we don’t know about our bodies helps pharmaceutical companies ‘sell’ their contraceptive drugs, and keeps us ‘addicted’ to them.” The birth control injection, Depo is prescribed more so to teen girls than any other demographic. How many are aware the method should not be used as a long-term birth control (longer than two years) and only if other methods are inadequate? Or that Depo affects bone mineral density and bone loss is greater with longer use and may not be completely reversible? Holly will share her research and discuss the controversy surrounding her book and the upcoming documentary Sweetening the Pill on Holy Hormones Honey!

Holy Hormones Honey! The Greatest Story Never Told is dedicated to every woman who has ever experienced a hormone fluctuation, from menarche to menopause! Sponsored by Truehope Inc, the leaders in brain health, the show will address core biological issues that cause mood disorders and/or mental illness from a micronutrient support perspective. Because no one can make a sound decision unless their brain functioning is intact.

For decades, the power of women’s hormone shifts has been unrecognized and underestimated. In fact, women make up the majority of mental health diagnoses’ due, in part, to a lack of education about the endocrine system and how and why our hormones affect our minds, moods, and behaviors. For too many years women have been labeled as ‘mentally disordered’ if they struggle with their menstrual cycle. Women will be the portal to sharing this information with the men and children in their lives. Because when women thrive, everyone thrives. Now that is true hope.
